For Makenzi McManus, music has always been connected to feeling. Not the polished, distant version of feeling artists are often told to package neatly, but the kind that arrives loudly, honestly, and without apology.

Based in North Vancouver after growing up in Chilliwack, Makenzi describes her sound as whimsical and romantic, shaped by ethereal cinematic soundscapes, poetic storytelling, and a deep sense of yearning. Her creative world lives somewhere between pastel colour, gold florals, fairylike imagery, and songs that feel like diary entries turned into something larger.

A voice that started early

Makenzi’s relationship with music began long before a release plan, studio session, or artist rollout. She grew up around music, remembers singing as a child, and still holds onto early moments of encouragement that made music feel less like a random path and more like something she was always moving toward.

She started with piano lessons, but the spark came when her teacher asked her to write a song. What could have been a simple assignment became a full pop song, and from there, songwriting became part of how she processed the world. Theatre, band, classical singing, music school, and years of writing all became pieces of the same larger story.

Turning feeling into sound

Makenzi’s music is rooted in vulnerability. She is not trying to make music that feels passive or detached. She is interested in emotional drums, lyrics that feel pulled from a private notebook, guitar lines that drive the moment, and strings that turn a song into a scene.

The Enchantress marks the beginning

Makenzi is preparing to release her first single, The Enchantress, on July 3, 2026, her 26th birthday. For a debut, she wanted the song to carry meaning. Rather than centering the story around heartbreak or someone else, The Enchantress is about the girl who has always loved to sing, the version of herself who has carried music from childhood into adulthood.

Listeners can expect what Makenzi calls unapologetic whimsicality and yearning. It is the first step in a larger chapter, with more songs planned shortly after and an EP on the horizon.

Finding confidence through community

Makenzi first connected with Beatcave through Vancouver CAMP. At first, imposter syndrome made it difficult for her to take the leap. She had demos and ideas, but not yet the finished catalogue she thought she needed. Eventually, she decided to send it anyway.

That decision helped shift something. Through CAMP, one-on-one support, and meeting producers, she found collaborators who helped her start discovering the sound she heard in her head. She credits Beatcave with helping her feel more grounded, secure, and encouraged during the vulnerable process of preparing a first release.

Her goals are big, and she knows it. She wants to release an EP, keep building her world, and eventually land sync opportunities. More than anything, she wants people to hear the magic she has been carrying for years.
