Stop Guessing What To Post: Campus Is Diving Into Content Strategy This October

6 min read

Most independent artists know they need content.

That is not the problem anymore.

The problem is figuring out what to make, why you are making it, who it is for, and how to know whether it actually worked.

You release a song. You make the announcement post. You upload the cover. Maybe you shoot a performance clip. Then you stare at your phone wondering what you are supposed to post tomorrow.

That is exactly what we want to change during October at Beatcave Campus.

Starting Tuesday, October 6 at 8:30 PM ET, Campus will become a four-week short-form content workshop led by Yulia Gonzalez and Shemar Alexander, the co-founders of CoCreator X.

The sessions continue every Tuesday through October 27, taking artists through the entire content process from strategy to production to analytics.

And this month is not about giving you another folder of content ideas. It is about helping you build a system.

CONTENT SHOULD NOT START WITH WHAT SHOULD I POST?

One of the biggest mistakes artists make with content happens before they ever open the camera.

They start with the post: What TikTok should I make? What trend should I try? What should I put on Reels?

But the better question is: What am I trying to make someone understand, feel or do?

Because your song is only one part of your artist world. Your personality, perspective, story, humour, taste, process, influences, experiences and point of view all give people reasons to stay connected between releases.

That is where strategy enters the picture. A strong content strategy gives you a way to repeatedly turn those things into videos instead of reinventing your entire social media presence every Monday morning.

THE ALGORITHM IS NOT JUST PUSHING YOUR VIDEO

When you post a short-form video, platforms like TikTok, Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts gather signals about how viewers respond to it.

Did they keep watching? Did they finish it? Did they watch again? Did they save it? Did they share it? Did they comment?

Understanding those signals changes the conversation from Why does the algorithm hate me? to What did the audience behaviour tell me about this video?

That is a much more useful question, and it is where October's Campus begins.

WEEK 1: UNDERSTANDING SHORT-FORM VIDEO AND THE ALGORITHM

Tuesday, October 6 at 8:30 PM ET

The first session starts under the hood. Yulia and Shemar will break down how recommendation platforms distribute content, how the For You Page works and how individual videos are tested.

Artists will learn which metrics matter, including watch time, completion rate, rewatches, saves, shares and comments. The goal is not to turn musicians into data analysts. It is to help you understand why one piece of content might travel while another stops moving.

You will also explore different short-form video formats and begin identifying which ones fit your music, goals and personality. Somebody else's viral format might not be your format.

WEEK 2: BUILDING YOUR ARTIST PERSONA AND TARGET ENGAGER STRATEGY

Tuesday, October 13 at 8:30 PM ET

This is where things get deeper than post consistently. Who are you inside your content? Who are you actually making it for? What role do you want to play in that person's world?

Week two introduces the idea of Target Engagers and starts building the artist as a protagonist rather than simply someone promoting music.

Artists will examine their protagonist, antagonist, counterparts, storytelling strategy and the repeatable role they can occupy in their videos. The goal is to develop a content persona that can become recognizable over time.

People rarely build a meaningful connection with an endless stream of promotional assets. They connect with a person, perspective or world they begin to recognize. Your song might get somebody's attention. Your world gives them a reason to come back.

THIS IS WHY CONTENT STRATEGY MATTERS BEYOND ONE RELEASE

Imagine having a song coming in two weeks. This system can help you promote it. Now imagine you have no release until 2027. The system still works.

You are not building a four-week marketing campaign around one record. You are learning how to create an ongoing relationship between you, your music and the people most likely to care about both.

That is a career skill.

This entire four-week Campus series is reserved for Beatcave Elevate members. If you have been considering joining the membership, October is an opportunity to come in and immediately start building something you can use across every release that comes next.

WEEK 3: TURNING STRATEGY INTO ACTUAL VIDEOS

Tuesday, October 20 at 8:30 PM ET

Strategy means very little if it stays inside a notebook. Week three moves into execution.

Artists will develop content pillars, identify repeatable video formats and learn different production systems for turning ideas into multiple pieces of content.

Yulia and Shemar will introduce their Mount Everest and Pokémon Content Production Systems, designed around producing content at different levels of effort and extracting more material from larger ideas.

Participants will also work through the CoCreator X Video Strategy Worksheet. Instead of simply saying, I should make a video for this song, you will break that video down by its purpose, Target Engagers, format, hook, story and call to action.

The class will cover practical production topics including smartphone and camera setups, microphones, lighting, framing, teleprompters and more efficient ways to shoot short-form videos.

The goal is not Hollywood. The goal is repeatability. If your content system requires a crew, three locations and a $2,000 budget every time you post, you probably do not have a sustainable content system.

WEEK 4: EDITING, POSTING AND READING THE RESULTS

Tuesday, October 27 at 8:30 PM ET

The final week closes the loop. Artists will learn how to edit short-form videos using mobile and desktop tools, including pacing, cuts, captions, B-roll, sound, framing and on-screen visuals.

Then comes packaging: titles, captions, cover text, thumbnails and platform-specific posting decisions.

And finally, the part too many artists ignore: What happened after you posted?

You will learn how to examine retention, watch time, completion rate, rewatches, saves, shares, comments and follower conversion. Not so you can obsess over every number, but so you can make a smarter next video.

That is the difference between randomly posting content and actually developing a content strategy. You create. You publish. You learn. You adjust. Then you do it again.

MEET YULIA GONZALEZ AND SHEMAR ALEXANDER

Yulia Gonzalez and Shemar Alexander are the co-founders of CoCreator X, a Los Angeles-based short-form video strategy and production company working across entertainment, music, media and education.

Together, they help artists, creators and organizations develop repeatable video strategies built around recommendation platforms and For You Page algorithms.

Their client experience includes will.i.am, the NFL, HBO, STARZ, Warner Records, YouTube Originals, NBCUniversal and BET, among other entertainment and media brands.

They also teach short-form video strategy and content production through UCLA Extension and the GRAMMY Museum.

For Shemar, the artist side of the equation is personal. Known artistically as AVTR OFTN, he is a musician and performer who has performed at the GRAMMY Museum. He also runs Toronto in a Minute, a short-form video platform centred around Toronto culture and stories.

That combination matters because this is not content education being taught to artists by people who have never had to think like artists. It sits at the intersection of creative identity, music and the mechanics of short-form video.

CAMPUS IS NOT SUPPOSED TO END WHEN THE CALL ENDS

Independent artists are constantly being told what they should be doing: market yourself, build a brand, make content, network, learn the business, pitch your music.

The advice pile gets taller every year. We built Campus to create a place where artists could actually spend time learning how to do those things with people actively working in those areas.

October is a perfect example. You should not finish these four weeks simply knowing more about TikTok or Reels.

You should leave with a clearer understanding of your audience, a stronger content identity, repeatable formats, a production process and a way of measuring what to improve next. That is considerably more useful than another list of 50 hooks.

WHY ELEVATE?

Campus is available exclusively to Beatcave Elevate members, but Campus is only one part of the reason Elevate exists.

The tier is designed for independent music creators who want more infrastructure around what they are building, including Campus education, industry A&R feedback, the Beatcave Sync Library, promotional support and deeper strategy support from the Beatcave team.

You can develop your content strategy inside Campus, get feedback on your music and positioning through A&R sessions, prepare your catalogue for opportunities through the Sync Library, and use Beatcave's other resources to help with releasing, promoting and developing the business around the music.

The point is not to collect benefits. The point is to stop trying to solve every part of your career from scratch.

OCTOBER STARTS OCTOBER 6

If content has been one of those things you keep saying you are going to figure out eventually, this is your month.
