Stop Promoting Your Song. Build the Funnel: Discovery, Connection, Conversion

A lot of music marketing is just the same message wearing different clothes.

New song Friday. Pre-save now. Out tonight. Stream it. Link in bio. Acoustic version. Reminder that it is still out.

There is nothing wrong with asking people to listen. The problem is asking before you have given a stranger any reason to care.

A funnel is not a link. It is a sequence.

For an independent artist, a simple content funnel can be three stages: Discovery, Connection and Conversion.

Discovery earns the first second. Connection earns emotional or cultural relevance. Conversion makes the next action obvious.

Most artists jump straight to stage three.

Stage 1: Discovery

Discovery content is built for somebody who has no context. They do not know your name, your story or why the song matters. Your job is not to explain everything. Your job is to interrupt the scroll with something understandable immediately.

  • A strong lyric that creates tension.

  • A visual or performance moment that works without introduction.

  • A specific opinion about music, relationships, culture or the scene you belong to.

  • A recognizable situation your target fan already lives through.

  • A format people understand before they know who you are.

Discovery is the front door. If the front door is confusing, the rest of the house does not matter.

Stage 2: Connection

This is where you stop being “a person with a song” and start becoming somebody the viewer can place in their world.

  • Why you wrote the record.

  • The conflict behind a lyric.

  • A recurring character, joke, ritual or series.

  • A piece of your real life that gives the music context.

  • Behind-the-scenes decisions that show taste and personality.

  • Fan conversations that reveal what the song means to other people.

Connection is not a trauma dump requirement. You do not owe the internet your private life. You do need enough specificity that the audience can feel a point of view.

Stage 3: Conversion

Once attention and connection exist, the ask becomes natural.

  • Listen to the full song.

  • Save it.

  • Follow for the next part.

  • Join the email or text list.

  • Buy the ticket.

  • Pre-save the next release.

  • Watch the full performance.

Conversion content should make one next step obvious. Ten calls to action in the same post turn the exit sign into a Christmas tree.

Alex Warren's WILDCHILD rollout is a useful large-scale example

In August 2026, TikTok described an Alex Warren WILDCHILD campaign that used a talk-show-style live event, interactive in-app fan tasks and a livestreamed Sydney arena performance. The official TikTok newsroom breakdown is worth studying.

The useful lesson is not “copy Alex Warren” or “you need an arena livestream.” It is that the rollout gave fans different jobs at different moments: discover, interact, participate, watch, save and listen.

That is a funnel.

Use the 2-2-1 ratio

For every five posts in a release window, try this Beatcave operating ratio:

  • 2 Discovery posts designed primarily to reach strangers.

  • 2 Connection posts designed to deepen the artist world.

  • 1 Conversion post with a clear listening, follow, signup or ticket action.

This is not a law and it is not Alex Warren's posting formula. It is a starting ratio that stops your feed from becoming five consecutive advertisements for the same song.

What this looks like for one single

  • Discovery 1: the strongest lyric framed as a relatable conflict.

  • Discovery 2: a performance hook in a visually unusual location.

  • Connection 1: the story of the line everybody keeps commenting on.

  • Connection 2: a recurring series episode that uses the song naturally.

  • Conversion 1: the full chorus with a direct “listen to the full record” call to action.

Measure movement, not just views

A Discovery post can succeed without generating huge streams immediately if it drives profile visits and gets new people into your world. A Connection post can succeed through comments, repeat viewers and follows. A Conversion post should be judged more directly on clicks, saves, streams, signups or ticket actions.

Stop asking one post to do every job.

Build the system around the song

The song is the product. Content is how people discover the product, understand the world around it and decide whether they want a deeper relationship with the artist.

Beatcave members can use Content Lab to build repeatable content formats and the wider membership ecosystem, as well as one on one calls to discuss your funnel and how you can turn people just viewing to following to a fan!
